A Railwayman's Log

In today's post, 12th November 2013, I am using sixteen pics from five contributors. The final retro section includes a fascinating account of steam traffic, logged by a railwayman on a Welsh main line in 1961.

WINWICK

A foursome from Jeff Nicholls, in the form a of a picture story, starts this section. Reading from left to right and top to bottom, the pics read like this :

(1) Freightliner 'PowerHaul' class 70, 70016 on the early afternoon Ellesmere Port - FFPS loaded coal crossing the Mersey en route for the Latchford run-round (note the semaphore signal). (2) Shows the loco having detached from the train passing under the A49 bridge and pulling back to clear the signal. (3)  The loco about to move back on to its train. (4) The train at  Latchford ready to depart for FFPS. All four pics are dated 8th November 2013 and are numbered individually -
Code - November W1; W2; W3 and W4

The fifth shot is also from Jeff . Taken at Bank Quay, DBS class 60, 60059 Swinden Dalesman is featured with a coal working on 8th November 2013. The red buffers match the loco.
 Code - November W5

Pic number six has been sent in by John Smith. Pictured from a different Winwick viewpoint, the shot shows DRS class 66, 66413 on a Crewe - Carnforth departmental working on 27th September 2013.

Pic number seven is from Bob McClellan. DBS class 60, 60063 is pictured on the 'Preston tanks' over Chat Moss where the working is being diverted, following repair work at Copy Pit. This is the first diversion and was taken on 11th November 2013.
Code - November W6

ALTERNATIVE UK PICS

Bob McClellan has sent in the first three pics in this section. Pic number eight shows GBRf 66729 Derby County at Runcorn East on a loaded biomass working, Ellesmere Port - Ironbridge on 24th October 2013.

Bob's second shot, number nine overall depicts Freightliner class 66, 66604 at Chapel en le Frith with the Ratcliffe PS - Tunstead empty hoppers on 4th November 2013.
 Code - November A1

Another DBS class 60 is up next, 60020 taken in the Hope Valley at Edale, on 7th November 2013. The working was Peak Forest - Selby loaded hoppers. Bob took this pic, number ten, from Mam Tor.
Code - November A2

The following three pics are from David Quayle taken at ELR on 19th October 2013. Pics numbered eleven and twelve both show the Stanier 'Pacific', No.46233 Duchess of Sutherland, but from different angles. Pic number eleven was at Bury

Pic number twelve, showing the 'Duchess' tender first, was at Ramsbottom.

BR 'Standard' class '4' 2-6-4T, No.80080, is up next in pic number thirteen, taken at Bury on 19th October 2013.

RETRO SHOTS

The following three pics were all taken by the late Ken Wood, father of David Wood, one of our regular contributors. They were taken in the sixties. The pics are therefore attributed to David.

Pic fourteen shows the Fowler/Stanier 'Royal Scot' class 4-6-0, No.46141 The North Staffordshire Regiment, taken in 1962 - the location could be Rugby.

Double heading class 25s are pictured next, pic number fifteen. They are 25912 and 25911 passing Miles Platting signal box with a working of oil tanks. The date - 26th March 1986.

The final shot, number sixteen, is a very interesting copy of Ken Wood's log from August (?) 1961 showing the times of the down line traffic at Llanfair PG. I have ringed the inclusion of No.71000 Duke of Gloucester on its way to Holyhead.

Voting is underway for the 'Pic of the Month',  October 2013 competition. The voting system is simple - just send me the yellow October code numbers of the three pics you have chosen as 1st, 2nd and 3rd in each section, Winwick, and Alternatives (UK and World combined). All October dated pics posted between 5th October and 30th October are eligible, and have code numbers. My email address is at the top of the blog. Everyone, contributors or not, can vote; please do so.
