A Mixed Bag

For this post, 5th February 2012,  I have put together a mixture of pics from eight contributors.

WINWICK

In this Winwick area section four pics are used, the first from Jeff Nicholls. DBS red liveried class 60, 60007, with the 'Switch on to Safety' side logo, is seen traversing the Mersey bridge with a coal working on 1st February 2012.

** This pic qualifies for 'Winwick Area Pic of the Month, Feb 2012.

The second pic is from Paul Holland. Taken on 14th February 2011, Paul's shot shows First ScotRail liveried class 90, 90021, at the Mersey crossing. The load was Freightliner flats from Basford Hall.

The next shot is a little different and shows one of the dmus operating through Winwick at present. Taken on 23rd November 2011, the shot of ex London Midland class 150, 150116, is from John Smith. The unit has been transferred to Northern Rail (....we get all the cast-offs).

West Coast Railway Company class 47, 47804 is up next, pic number four, from Matthew Chambers. The loco and two coaches are on the slow line through Bank Quay on 26th August 2010.

ALTERNATIVE UK PICS

First up in this section, pic number five, shows a Charles Collett 'Hall' class 4-6-0 (ex GWR), No.4953 Pitchford Hall, from Geoff Monks. The loco is heading a demonstration mail train at Woodthorpe Lane just south of Loughborough on 28th January 2012.

** This pic qualifies for 'Alternatives Pic of the Month Jan 2012'

Next, pic number six, is another Loughborough shot, this one from David Quayle. Two, highly successful 2-8-0 locomotive designs are pictured on the GCR on 27th January 2012. On the left is a Robinson class O4 (GCR 8K)  No.63601 and on the right, a Stanier class 8F, in Crimson Lake livery, No.(4)8624.

** This pic qualifies for 'Alternatives Pic of the Month Jan 2012'

Pic number seven is from Alan Rigby. Pictured crossing the picturesque  Frodsham Viaduct, is Freightliner 'PowerHaul' class 70, 70003, on an Ellesmere Port - Fiddlers Ferry coal working on 1st February 2012.

** This pic qualifies for 'Alternatives Pic of the Month, Feb 2012'.

The final pic, number eight, is from Dave Harris. Pictured is a First Great Western HST, slowing down for its stop at Teignmouth with a service to London, in July 2009. The exact location is Shaldon Bridge.

ALTERNATIVE WORLD PICS

Just one in this section, pic number nine. It's from Jeff Nicholls and was taken in Germany on 5th October 2008. The loco is a huge 2-10-2, metre gauge tank example No.99 7328 1, and the location was Wernigerode shed on the Harz Railway System.

The '2011 PHOTOGRAPH OF THE YEAR' Competition was won by Geoff Monks.  John Smith and Bob McClellan tied for second place. Later this week I will be devoting a complete post to Geoff and his photography which will also include his winning pic. Many congratulations Geoff.

I am hoping to gain sponsorship for next year's comp and make it easier to vote. One idea put forward recently is to hold a 'pic of the month comp', each month end, so that at the end of the year only twelve pics will be judged for pic of the year. I can easily put these together in a single post for judging. Should the pics chosen also have been taken in the current year to be a true reflection of the competition title? What do you think? Comments please soon, as the January pic will need to be decided if the option described is accepted. Or can you think of a better option?
